I am sorry but things have come up within my life and I need to take a break from blogging. I will hopefully be back in two weeks but I am not sure. I hope everyone has a safe weekend, and be sure to take care of each other.
Hello everyone. As you recall I was saying how I did not want to make this a Game of Thrones blog. That much is true, but since it is one of my favorite active shows right now I find it hard to not speak of it. Which brings up the question, should I be blogging before or after the show airs? I am still thinking about that one and as you can tell by reading this I am blogging before.
There are other things to discuss ahead of GoT. I recently finished a book. Seems like it has been a long time since I put a book on here. This one is by Chris Hayes. Twilight of the Elites is a book about the present and past meritocracy. Meritocracy is basically the thought of power, money, and time being invested into the best and brightest of the world, sort of like the anime S.A. or Special A. I know, a lot of people are going to read Chris Hayes and stop right there. People might say “Oh, he is a liberal, I have no desire to read what he has to say”. First off, with the popularity of Anne Coulter and Glenn Beck books, maybe people should start reading more liberal authors. No, seriously, please do. I am tired of seeing garbage books in my local bookstore or Barnes & Nobles. Second, he actually comes off quite bi-partisan in his thoughts and views. Hayes also uses quite a bit of interesting and new statistics that I have never seen before. He also grabbed me with his new and unique ideas as to correcting our system. Some parts missed their intended impactful mark and he at times he often wandered off in his own thoughts straying a bit far from the point he was trying to make. Overall, a good read. B- for Twilight of the Elites. A nice first showing from Chris Hayes as an author.
I also watched three movies: This is 40, We Bought a Zoo, and Religulous. I won’t even bother grading This is 40. For me, the movie was pure trash. I laughed in spots I was not supposed to, everyone comes off as unlikable, and in the end it became a poorly done slice of life movie.
We Bought a Zoo was actually quite charming. Was it one of the best movies I have ever seen? No, not even close. However, it certainly was not the worst. I was already a Matt Damon fan, but this guy really shows some amazing nuances within this movie that further prove his acting chops to me and hopefully the rest of the audience. I believe it underperformed for the actors involved, but I am happy I sat down and watched it. We Bought a Zoo gets a C.
Finally Religulous. First let me state that I am a HUGE, yes HUGE, Bill Maher fan. He is my oasis in the sea of human stupidity. However, I am Catholic. With my love for science I am sure it is hard for many to understand, so this movie took me quite a few years to actually sit down and watch. But, lo and behold, it was on Netflix. Maher is funny, yet respectful throughout the entire movie. My favorite moment is him speaking with Reginald Foster outside of the Vatican. I do have to admit, I was offended by one segment of the movie. Surprisingly, it was not from the proud atheist. There was a scene where Maher visited a sort of biblical Disney World. At one point he is speaking to a man dressed as Jesus and the man proceeds to say it was God’s will that the Holocaust happened. What? Seriously do you understand why some of the population hates your guts? Forget the fact that he just said that, it is what the man actually believes! Setting that disgusting moment aside though, I did enjoy most of it. For rating, I would say I am stuck between a C+ and a B-. Maybe it would depend on the day.
Onto Game of Thrones… This show has really grabbed me in a place I did not think it would. No I am not trying to be dirty though that would fit parts of this show. I mean there is just a ton of depth. I have placed my order (thank you B&N e-mail coupon) for the first four books of A Song of Ice and Fire. I plan to read the first two books and once the third season is done I will read the third. My hope is it will expand the world even more for me. I cannot wait to see tonight’s episode. I have a feeling someone will die. We shall see together.
Well this went far too long. I am sorry I did not mean to make this quite the read it has become but I hope you enjoy it. Take care all.
Hello all. I am sorry for the delay but I was unsure of the format to blog with. I did not want to turn this into a Game of Thrones blog, but at the same time I did not have much to write about. With that in mind, fantasy will meet wrestling.
This WrestleMania was number 29. Though it lacked a bit of star power, that will happen when you fail to create new stars. The crowd was as good as it could be with an open air stadium. I was very proud that the event was held in my home state of NJ. Unfortunately I could not afford tickets. Punk vs. The Undertaker was the best match by far. There was great emotion and struggle throughout and At some points I actually thought Punk might pull off a win. The only negative thing I have to say about it was the length. The match was far too short and they both deserved more. Triple H vs. Lesnar was also solid. Honestly it was a good WrestleMania. This was far from the best, but unlike what some people on the internet are saying, this was very far from the worst. Does no one remember 11, 9, 13? Take away the Austin/Bret match and 13 was one of the worst ever. But getting back to 29, I am torn… I really want to give this show a B- but I think I would feel better with a C+.
Game of Thrones, why do you taunt me so?! You flaunt these amazing ideas and possibilities and then rip the end game away from me, saying “until next time”. First off there was not enough Tyrion. They could remake the show into the Tyrion hour and I would be content. Of course that will not happen, but at least give the man some real screen time. I will say it was quite interesting to see Jamie finally handle a sword in a real duel. Though we do not see it often, let us not forget he was king’s guard and of course has the title of Kingslayer. So he should be one of the best duelists in the land. That aside, I am sure I am not the only one who wants to see how good he really is. Just a light side note, who does not want a dire wolf? Seriously they are beautiful creatures and who the hell would ever mess with you or your property? No Dany mention really which was odd especially after the season opener. Also, I really could care less about any Greyjoy. Am I the only one? Besides the cool sigil, words, and amazing Iron Islands I would be fine not seeing them again. I think a B for this episode is fair enough. I hope next week they really impress me.
Have a good week all. Enjoy the nice weather.
I did not post this weekend because I wanted my entry to be about the season premier of Game of Thrones. Finally, after buying the first two seasons of this show, I have HBO and can watch it on my television. So, I very lovingly told my girlfriend to leave me alone for an hour, and just sat back and enjoyed the episode.
I cannot lie, a bit of disappointment hit me as the credits rolled. Strange as it may be to read, I was a bit annoyed that no one died. I felt like they had this huge audience, over 4 million watching and they could have made a big impact. Even though I was disappointed with some of the story, they did set up quite a bit. Besides a lot of things being put into motion, the acting was just as good as it has ever been. I am just waiting for my favorite character Tyrion, to explode with rage and get back at everyone in his family who treats him poorly. Maybe he will ally with the Starks… We will see.
I could read the books and know what is happening two seasons from now to stop myself from going crazy, but there is something special about keeping this as a television show first and then reading after it is over. I read quite a bit of books as you can tell from my blog, but this one I want to keep special. This is one of the few series in existence that refuses to pull punches and that visual surprise of someone dying who you did not expect to, or a quick turn of allegiance, just brings out the sheer excitement in me like no other show has since Lost.
Game of Thrones Episode One of Season 3: Valar Dohaeris (All Men Must Serve) gets a B+ for its efforts. After watching the teaser for next week, I cannot wait to see what happens next.
Take care all, and be sure to watch this show!
