Hello all. I hope this entry finds you well. I actually had a few things to review this week but I am going to hold off on them until another time. What I really wanted to discuss is the television series Chuck. As I have mentioned in previous posts, I started to watch this show recently and I have just finished. The reason I want to talk about this show only is because I am hoping that if one person reads this and goes out and watches it, then there will be one new fan of this series, the actors and a very unique genre. That is how important Chuck is to me. It has become one of my top 5 television shows of all time, in fact it is number three.
Chuck was a very unassuming show early on. It wasn’t until season two that I fell in love with it and it’s characters. By season three I was lapping up every episode as quickly as possible and by the final episode I did tear up a bit. More than anything else this show is about characters and their relationship with one another. It is about bringing mostly unheard of actors together and making us care about their trials and tribulations in life, love and awkward moments. It is actually very hard for me to remember caring more about an on-screen relationship more than Chuck and Sarah. I actually cursed at my television when Chuck found a note from Morgan in his wallet in leu of a condom. Chuck and Sarah were so close! The jerk!!
Besides the relationships though, the characters are so well fleshed out. We get to know everything there is to know about them down to their inside jokes with each other. I actually related quite a bit to Chuck. Here is a guy that has so much potential but because of things out of his control he ends up in a job where his intellect is completely stifled. To see someone like that have a chance taken on them and they not only run with it but blossom into an amazing person… It was almost a wonderful dream.
On top of everything else though, the geek/nerd references and fantastic acting, you also had Jeffster. It was no coincidence that several of my favorite scenes involved them. Their first song Africa which crescendos into Chuck and Sarah holding each other’s hand would of course be my first one. Ok yes I also watched it several times on YouTube. Along with that you also have the laugh out loud moment of Push It in the hospital and them saving General Beckman with Take On Me. They had so many great moments that I will forever remember in my memory banks of television and cinema genius. However my favorite moment was definitely Chuck and Sarah prepping Morgan for a meeting of bad guys. How else could you get a nerd into such a diabolical character other than humming the Imperial March? It was perfect! And the straightening of the tie into “kill the puppy” was gold. In a sense, the character with the most growth was the co-star Morgan. I was so happy to see him and Alex do their weird twin reaction they sometimes have during the last episodes. They are a great fit for each other and he deserved a positive payoff in the end.
Series like Chuck are important. Let’s face it, there is a lot of trash on television. With all the reality show garbage and cop shows it is hard to find something that not only makes you laugh but also can make you cry. This show had heart and it’s only problem was the people who would identify with the very soul of the show did not watch when it aired. Maybe they were like me and never saw the ad campaign for it, maybe they watched it online, or on demand. This show is more deserving of being on air then hundreds of shows currently on. This show had heart and I love them for it. So, for the last episode, my girlfriend drove us to Subway, I bought us sandwiches and we saw them off. I know a lot of people were upset with the ending, my girlfriend being one of them, but remember how much Chuck and Sarah love each other. The clues were there for a reason. There was a happy ending you just needed to pay attention to it and let Yvonne’s stellar acting show you the proof. It was subtle but the director and actress did their job well.
I really hope if you are reading this and never saw the show that you go out and buy it. They are moving to Netflix soon but you will want to own it I promise you. The final score for Chuck is an A+. I love this show and I always will. Maybe a movie will be made one day but until then I will continue to re-watch it because it is that special. Thank you to everyone who not only brought it to life but also made it possible and thank you to the fans I couldn’t join that helped keep it alive. Have a good weekend all.
