Hello! I hope this all finds you well and you are all in the holiday spirit. I was hoping that for this entry I would have Prisoner of Azkaban done. However, I was not able to finish it in time.
I did go to see The Hobbit though!!!! Wow… What an amazing movie. Now, it isn’t an exact replica of the book, nor is it a copy of the 1977 animation. So do not go in expecting those things, you will be disappointed. If you are just a fan in general of the mythos that is Middle Earth you will enjoy yourself. Truth be told, I have always been a bigger fan of The Hobbit. So this movie meant a lot to my geek self. Most of the changes I really had no problem with. The only major change that bothered me was Bilbo not taking Sting himself. It was handed to him by Gandalf. This bothered me because Bilbo made it seem as if he wasn’t worthy of the sword when in the book he is the one who takes it from the cave. A more minor issue is the way the dwarves look. Some of them are spot on for what you would expect a dwarf to look like. Others, not so much. Thorin is a big culprit of this. In some scenes he looks like he is coming straight out of a romance novel cover.
Those two issues aside, the story is great. It is only slow in the beginning but then picks up speed and doesn’t look back. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous. More movies need to be shot in New Zealand. Also important to note that the higher frame rate was noticeable but was not a detractor, it was just different. The acting is spot on. Everyone pulls their weight on the screen. The real breakout star though, is the music. You will be hard pressed to find a more perfect matching of score to film in the entire history of movies. They outdid themselves for sure. At one point my girlfriend actually leaned over to tell me how much she was enjoying one of the songs. I will make it a point to save Christmas money and pick up The Hobbit CD. I am reluctant to give the highest marks possible at the moment but I do plan on seeing this again in theatres. For now, The Hobbit gets an A.
Also, something special was packaged with The Hobbit… A STAR TREK TRAILER! They showed about 10 minutes of Star Trek goodness and I cannot wait for this to release. The action was fantastic, the visuals were beautiful and the dialogue was spot on with what I would expect. Star Trek: Into Darkness released May 17, 2013. I will be there!
No matter what holiday you celebrate I want you all to be safe and even if it has been a hard year do yourself a favor and find at least one thing to smile about. Spending time with family, friends and loved ones, that is the real joy of the holidays. We have our issues but we all care about each other. Thank you all for reading my little blog. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and God bless.
